DTH or Top Hammer? Choosing the Right Drilling Tools for Your Project

In rock drilling, there is no single drilling tool that fits every application.

The right choice depends on rock formation, hole diameter, drilling depth, equipment configuration, required penetration rate, and—most importantly—the total cost per meter.

At Fasikon Drilling Tools, we mainly work with DTH drilling tools, but through our work with mining and drilling customers, we also see increasing demand for Top Hammer drilling tools, drill rods, couplings and replacement rock bits.

🔹 DTH drilling — when depth and hard rock performance matter

Down-the-hole drilling places the hammer directly behind the bit.

This configuration can provide:

• Efficient energy transfer at greater drilling depths
• Stable drilling performance in hard and abrasive formations
• Good hole straightness
• A wide range of bit and hammer configurations
• Excellent suitability for mining, quarrying, construction and water-well drilling

Typical DTH products include:

DTH Hammers | DTH Button Bits | Drill Pipes/Rods | Couplings | Accessories

🔹 Top Hammer drilling — when flexibility and productivity are priorities

Top Hammer systems transfer impact energy through the drill string.

Depending on the application, common thread systems include:

R32 | T38 | T45 | T51

Top Hammer tooling is widely used for:

• Mining development
• Quarrying
• Construction drilling
• Long-hole drilling
• Rock bolting
• Exploration and other specialized drilling applications

For some projects, the right bit design and button configuration can make a bigger difference than simply choosing a larger hammer.

🔹 What should you consider when selecting a drilling bit?

Instead of looking only at the diameter or thread, we recommend evaluating:

1. Rock formation
Hardness, abrasiveness, fracturing and geological conditions directly affect bit life.

2. Bit face design
Button shape, number, layout and gauge protection influence penetration and service life.

3. Thread connection
R32, T38, T45, T51 and other thread systems must match the drill string and equipment.

4. Flushing system
Efficient air or water flushing is essential for removing cuttings and controlling bit temperature.

5. Cost per meter
The cheapest bit is not necessarily the most economical bit.

A better benchmark is:

Cost per meter = Total drilling tool cost ÷ Actual drilling meters

A bit that costs slightly more but drills significantly further can often deliver a lower overall drilling cost.

🔹 OEM replacement is becoming increasingly important

For mining contractors and drilling-tool distributors, replacing expensive original-brand tooling with qualified alternatives can create significant cost advantages.

We are seeing increasing demand for replacement and equivalent products for different drilling systems, including:

DTH | R32 | T38 | T45 | T51 | Wireline Core Drilling

For equivalent products, we believe the key is not simply copying the appearance.

The critical factors are:

Material → Heat Treatment → Thread Accuracy → Carbide Quality → Button Layout → Flushing → QC

That is where manufacturing experience matters.

🔹 What can Fasikon support?

Our core business is DTH drilling tools, and we are also expanding our capabilities and sourcing network for Top Hammer and other rock drilling products.

We can support customers with:

✓ DTH hammers and bits
✓ Rock drilling bits
✓ R32 / T38 / T45 / T51 tooling
✓ Drill rods and couplings
✓ Replacement drilling components
✓ OEM / equivalent products
✓ Technical drawings and customized requirements
✓ China-based sourcing and export support

If you are a drilling contractor, mining company, distributor or drilling-tool buyer, send us your current bit photo, drawing, thread specification or part number.

We can check the application and manufacturing feasibility with our engineering team.

Good drilling starts with the right tool.
